Strategic Plan

Prepared March 1999

The critical role of library & information services | The benefits of ALIA and WA Branch Council | Key result areas

The Critical Role of Library & Information Services

As part of its Mission Statement ALIA states:

'...ALIA asserts as a basic right of citizenship the right to free access to information and acknowledges the competitive advantage of a community which has access to timely and accurate information.'
WA Branch Council has further explored the critical role of Library and Information Services in:
  • Facilitating equitable access to information regardless of where it is stored, or in what format.
  • Enabling all members of our multicultural society to have access to the recorded knowledge of the human race.
  • Empowering people and communities through knowledge.
  • Promoting information literacy and lifelong learning.
  • Assisting economic growth and enhancing leisure through access to information.

Librarians and information professionals play a critical role in society by achieving the above through:

  • Upholding professionalism and ethics in the information professions.
  • Being advocates of free access to information.
  • Maintaining a commitment to service.
  • Continuing the tradition of rigour in training and education.
WA Branch Council recognises the significant changes occurring in society, individual organisations and the information industry and believes that the challenges will translate into a bright future for librarians and information professionals.
