1997 ALIA TAFE section conference

Issues To provide General Council with a report on planning for the 1997 ALIA TAFE section conference.

Significant progress has been made in planning for the 6th ALIA TAFE Section national conference which will be held from 25-26 August 1997 at the Sydney Marriott, Sydney. The theme of the conference is Partnerships in learning - the creative strategy and the program sub-committee has secured a number of specialists from within the vocational and university sectors as keynote speakers and presenters who will explore different aspects of the theme.

Donna Shields is the conference convenor, and Jo-anne Fuller is providing administrative support to the conference committee. The conference will be officially opened by the Honorable Bob Debus MP, whose portfolios include the Minister Assisting the New South Wales Minister for the Arts. The opening address will be delivered by Gaye Hart, director of the Hunter Institute of Technology, TAFE New South Wales. Di Booker, manager, Open Learning Information and Materials Clearinghouse, will set the scene on the first morning with a discussion of 'Focus on Learning', the blueprint for libraries in the VET sector. Keynote speakers include Dr Gary Willmott, assistant director-general, Education and Training Services, New South Wales Department of Training and Education Co-ordination (DTEC), who will address the conference on MAATS, the National Apprenticeship System, and user choice, the implications for TAFE of increased competition in the training market and the challenges and opportunities this poses for libraries within TAFE. Also Neil McLean, university librarian, Macquarie University, will share his experiences of Educational Partnerships at Macquarie University and offer insights into the 21st century. Associate Professor John G Hedberg, director of the Interactive Multimedia Learning Laboratory, Faculty of Education, associate dean and head of the Graduate School of Education, and associate professor, Information technology in Education, University fo Wollongong, will explore the use of interactive multimedia in the educational context and the implication for libraries.

The conference registration brochure was included as an insert in the June issue of inCite. Copies of the registration brochure are held at the ALIA National Office and will be available during the meeting.
