Item 15.1.3

Publishing Policy Committee

Author Kerry Smith - convener
Issues Activity on this committee has been quiet during 1998. This is probably because a number of the publishing issues which came up earlier, particularly those driven by electronic technology, had been discussed and the committee's recommendations endorsed by General Council during 1997. There was some discussion regarding the role/remuneration to editor(s) in the latter part of 1997 and this was successfully resolved. Nevertheless, it occurs to me that having been through the exercise again as a member of the National Specials Committee who are seeking an editor for ASL as well as DASL, it might be timely for the Publishing Policy Committee to suggest some guidelines for the role of editors for ALIA publications. I would appreciate General Council feedback on this matter.

The ALIA Biennial conference is coming up and in the past we have taken the opportunity to meet with those of our editors in attendance at such conferences to discuss issues of common interest. I suggest that we should do this in Adelaide in October. Having said that, there is a chance I might not be there, so I would need to have someone stand in for me.

Recommendation
  • That General Council note the report
  • That General Council requests the ALIA Publishing Policy Committees to consider a suggested set of guidelines for editors of ALIA publications and to table a report at the November 1998 General Council meeting
