| The project is due for completion on 24 July 1998, and the new standards and supporting materials will be available soon after that date.
The members of the Steering committee have contributed a great deal of time, energy and expertise to the development of the training packages. In addition to the committee members - Angela Bridgland, Anne Hazell, Donna Reid and Jennefer Nicholson - Di Booker undertook a segment of the project work.
The revision of the standards has taken into consideration gaps identified in the previous standards and input from educators and practitioners. The Steering committee believes that the final product will provide a set of standards which better reflects the work within the sector and incorporates the development of new skills.
Information literacy has been strengthened, both personal and for the client, as has workplace training and assessment, multi media and information technology maintenance and user assistance.
All units of competency now have evidence guides and range of variables which expand on the content, application and assessment of the unit, and contextualise the unit.
The qualifications are at five levels: Certificate II, Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma. The content of these has been recommended by the Steering committee and is awaiting confirmation through consultation with State and Territory ITABs. This should be available by the General Council meeting and will be distributed at the meeting. The proposed packaging for qualifications aims to achieve more flexibility in building and recognising skill areas than is currently provided through the national curriculum qualifications. The proposed further Advanced Diploma qualification provides a career progression qualification for experienced library technicians.
Consultations were conducted by CREATE and the final documentation will be forwarded to all State and Territory ITABs prior to submission to the Australian National Training Authority.
The further stages of the project will develop support materials for providers of training and map the current national curriculum to the new standards. |
