Cataloguers Portfolio (Trevor Wakely)
I will be attending the 13th National Cataloguing Conference to be held Brisbane, 13-15 October. Any issues arising will be tabled.
Library Technicians Portfolio (Trevor Wakely)
A very successful national conference was held in Fremantle, 7-10 September.
The National Section has a new executive:
- National president: Kathy Sharrad (South Australia)
- National vice-president: Yvonne Brock (Qld)
- National secreatary: Kerrie Kelly (Vic)
While in Brisbane for the Cataloguing conference, I had a meeting with Yvonne Brock and the Qld Library Technicians section.
Special Libraries Portfolio (Chris Richardson)
There are several issues that have been and are continuing to be of concern to the Specials Section this year.
The implications of the Digital Agenda Bill to Special Libraries in "for-profit" organisations has caused much discussion and all members have been urged to provide National Office with whatever evidence they can of the effect of the revised definition.
The Section proposes that the 2003 Conference be held in Adelaide. While they realise that there is a possibility that Sections, Conferences, etc may be different by then they believe there is an urgent need to book a venue in Adelaide now if they are to get their preferred times in 2003. The Section believes it is worth providing a small deposit of approx $2 000 now (Special Libraries Section funds).compared to not having a suitable venue later.
There is also some concern about Australian Special Libraries (ASL) publication funds currently being held by National Office and the Section is corresponding with National Office over this matter.
The National executive has also expressed their disappointment at the seeming lack of consultation with National Sections as an entity on the Renewal Process. They are concerned that the consultation process is being channelled for the most part through State Branches and inCite without Sections and SIGs having a place in the communication chain. This was the subject of several meetings at the recent Specials Conference.
Finally, the 8th Asia Pacific Specials, Health and Law Librarians Conference was held in Hobart in August. A fuller report on the Conference appears under Item 14.2.
