Navigational elements

Each page across the website has a common frame of reference in the navigation panel on the left [A], which includes the common branding of the ALIA log mixed with the ALIAnet logotype, and a column of primary navigational buttons. These primary buttons remain constant across the site.

The masthead that spans the page [B] offers recognition of the present location in the site, and can include secondary 'micro-navigation' to related but usually distinctly different areas of the site. This 'micro-navigation' can be a few links or in some instances more than a dozen.

Text links on the right-hand side of the page [C] allow users to link to pages that have a direct relationship to each other, and sit at the same hierachical level. There are generally only a handful of these, and the links are kept as concise as possible.

Content dominates the central part of the page [D], and is sometimes supplemented with page-navigation elements, such as 'top', 'next' and 'previous' or 'back'.

Regular footer information [E], including the date of the page's last update, its absolute URL reference, plus links to our regular privacy statement, copyright statement and the all-important 'comments' page sit at the foot of each document. The comments page allows comment to be made about each page, or to make a request for further content.
