Abstract
The Independent Scholars' Association of Australia met in Canberra in May 1997 to discuss the impact of the collecting policies of libraries and the access and discard policies of archives on their activities. This article is an edited version of a paper which sought to show what a university library could and could not do for an independent scholar.
