CAUL 1978 and 1998: Two Time Slices - A Brief Personal Perspective*

Colin Steele

When I first attended a CAUL meeting in the late 1970s, the members and the structure of CAUL seemed little different from the 1960s but by 1998 there had been dramatic changes. Some of the major figures, such as Jolley, Bryan, Borchardt, Stockdale and Raymond, were still active at the end of the seventies but are now largely memories to the newer members...

...Margaret Cameron was often the 'token woman', although from time to time others attended as acting librarian such as Barbara Hale, Mollie Thomson and Gillian Blain...

* Colin Steele was asked to give two brief slices of CAUL from circa 1978 to 1998- it is in this spirit that this paper has been prepared: it is essentially impressionistic and not intended to be a detailed overview of CAUL's activities.
