Scholarly communication: crisis, response and future. A review of the literature

This paper briefly examines the system of scholarly communication in its historical context. It then reviews the body of literature relating to the system as an holistic entity, the literature relating to the 'crisis', the system's response to that crisis and, in conclusion, offers some predictions for the future.
